~ Greg Metze, Master Distiller
After 38 years at MGP, May 31, 2016 is the last day at the company for Master Distiller Greg Metze. In 2015, Metze was named “Distiller of the Year” by Whisky Advocate, one of the most prominent publications in the global spirits industry. MGP President and CEO Gus Griffin stated, “We appreciate all that Greg has done for us and the outstanding mentoring he has provided to the next generation of our Master Distillers. We wish Greg the best of luck with any endeavors he may pursue in the future.”
Gregg Hibbler, Corporate Director of Communications for MGP, said that leaving the company was Greg’s decision. “While he is departing sooner than we expected, we also knew he would not work forever, and have been planning with that in mind.” Hibbler said he was, “Unsure of Metze’s exact plans but, he indicated he wanted a change in lifestyle.”

Metze Was Part of 2011 Seagram’s Distillery Acquisition
MGP got its start in the distilled spirits industry in the 1940s producing grain neutral spirits and gins at its distillery in Atchison, KS, for bottlers and rectifiers. That business evolved further with MGP’s purchase of the historic Seagram’s distillery in Lawrenceburg, in 2011, which enabled the company to add premium whiskeys to its spirits portfolio while also increasing capacities for the production of grain neutral spirits and gins.
Future of Metze’s Select Indiana Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Hibbler was not ready to share news of a newly named master distiller but he did say, “Greg was one of several master distillers we have across MGP. We’ve developed a deep and solid base of talent, including several experts within the company who have greatly benefitted from Greg’s many years of mentoring. We will be making an announcement in the future about specific personnel moves.”
