Glenmorangie Distillery has announced a new limited edition release of Glenmorangie Pride 1974, a Single Malt Whisky and the third expression in the distillery’s Pride series. The other two releases include Pride 1981 and Pride 1978. The 41 year old limited edition includes only 503 crystal decanters and a sticker price of $9k.
This single malt whisky is a marriage of two whiskies from two casks, one matured for its entire life in ex-bourbon casks, the other in ex-Oloroso sherry butts. Glenmorangie says the whisky exhibits a salty and spicy character, intensified with age that showcases their dedication to its craft and wood management.
Glenmorangie Pride 1974 was created from spirit distilled in Scotland’s tallest stills by Glenmorangie’s legendary Men of Tain. Laid down the finest casks on October 30, 1974 – the spirit spent decades maturing under the expert care of select craftsmen, until Glenmorangie’s Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation & Whisky Stocks Dr. Bill Lumsden deem that it had reached its very peak color and character.

Combining Old Scotch with New Music
The company says the whisky’s beauty is so rare that it has inspired a musical composition reflecting its 41 years of maturation, its extraordinary depth, creative spirit, and the whisky’s artistry. Its inspired musical virtuoso Aaron Diehl, as part of Glenmorangie’s creative partnership with renowned piano maker Steinway & Sons to create a piece titled, Echoes of the Glen of Tranquillity. Aaron Diehl’s composition was unveiled in New York on March 23, 2017.
“Glenmorangie Pride 1974 is the oldest and deepest Glenmorangie ever to be released,” says Dr. Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie’s Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation & Whisky Stocks. “Its age lends the whisky an enriched intensity, born only of a slow, patient maturation. With its harmonic depths and exquisite melodies, Aaron Diehl’s inspired composition captures the whisky’s rare beauty.”
Glenmorangie Pride 1974 Tasting Notes Provided by the Distillery
Nose: Wonderful, deep, rich, salty and spicy flavors. Salted caramel toffee, chocolate truffles. Turkish delight, rum-and-raisin ice cream, and a hint of aged balsamic vinegar. Three or four drops of water release myriad complex vapors, reminiscent of warn brioche, yeast flour, ginger-snap biscuits and subtle, gentle blood orange, finally giving way to more hints of brioche, baked bread and cedar wood.
Taste: For a whisky of such age, the mouthfeel is soft, leading to surprisingly vibrant flavors of baked apples, oranges, honey and menthol. Lots of toffee, molasses, double cream and spicy clove and anise.
Finish: The aftertaste is lingering but gently soothing, with pecan, leather, fudge and creamy café latte.
The limited edition Glenmorangie’s Pride 1974 Single Scotch Malt Whisky is expected to go on sale in April 2017. Pride 1974 Scotch is bottled at 104 Proof/ 52% ABV with a suggested retail price of the $9,050.
