The Curtsinger theft ring story just keeps getting bigger and bigger. The stolen Pappy Van Winkle theft reported in October of 2013 was just the tip of the iceberg. A grand jury has handed out its tenth indictment in the Buffalo Trace Distillery and Wild Turkey Distillery heist. It’s expected that there could be more indictments to come.
Leslie Wright, a 34 year old security guard at Buffalo Trace was paid to “look the other way” on two occasions while Gilbert “Toby” Curtsinger drove a truck onto the distillery grounds and stole a total of 11 stainless steel barrels. Wright said Curtsinger told her the barrels were empty and would be sold for scrap. It turns out the barrels were far from empty. The contents are reported to have been 17 year old Eagle Rare bourbon worth about $12,000. Attorney Zachary Becker said the thefts took place while the distillery was open to the public for “ghost tours.” Wright was indicted on a Class-C felony for complicity to receiving stolen property of $10,000 or more.
The tally for stolen bourbon is now reported to be well north of $100,000. More to come!
