Rumors have been swirling for a few weeks. Now, Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky has officially announced a new W.L. Weller Bourbon Whiskey release. And just to make it more interesting, they’ve created a new bourbon term – Full Proof. They’ve actually used the term for a Barton 1792 bourbon release a few years ago but it’s new for the Weller line.
What is Full Proof Bourbon Whiskey?
There are many distilled spirits terms that don’t have official TTB definitions and this is one of them. It’s similar to barrel strength yet it’s not. Full proof is actually the barrel entry proof or original proof recorded when the white dog whiskey entered the barrel.
W.L. Weller Bourbon will be 114° proof (57% ABV) and non-chill filtered. Buffalo Trace Distillery fills their wheated bourbon barrels at 114 proof. This bourbon completely skips chill filtration to preserve all the naturally occurring residual oils and flavors which means it may appear cloudy when cold. The company says by offering this high proof non-chill filtered version, Weller’s signature wheated bourbon flavor and mouthfeel will be showcased.
“We expect fans of Weller will be excited about this new offering. Bourbon drinkers are asking us for high proof and non-chill filtered bourbon more and more,” said Kris Comstock, senior marketing director. “Bar owners and liquor stores who have selected barrels of Weller over the years will regularly request their bourbon to be non-chill filtered. It will be nice to offer Weller Full Proof as an option.”

Tasting Notes from Buffalo Trace – This new expression has a nose of vanilla, dark cherries and caramel. On the palate, there is a balance of caramel and toasted oak. The finish is said to be long, with notes of crème brulee and chocolate.
The W.L. Weller Full Proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey will be available in limited quantities starting in June 2019 with a suggested retail price of $49.99. Buffalo Trace says this is expected to be an annual release.
