Alltech, parent company of Town Branch Distillery in Lexington, KY just broke ground on their newest brand – Dueling Barrels Brewery & Distillery in Pikeville, KY. Officially, their Lexington operation is a combination brewery and distillery (Brewstillery) that goes by the full name of Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company. Their newest baby is a similar and officially goes by Dueling Barrels Brewing & Distilling Company.
Dueling Barrels Distillery
Lexington Brewing & Distilling began in 2,000 as a brewery, its Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale® has grown to become the brewery’s flagship brew, capitalizing on the brewery’s proximity to fresh Kentucky bourbon barrels. 10 Years later they added the distillery and in 2012, Town Branch Distillery joined the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

The new Dueling Barrels brewery and distillery is expected to open in Spring of 2017 at a cost of $13 million and will celebrate the unique Eastern Kentucky heritage. This area of Kentucky is best known for coal mines, country music, moonshine and a family fued believed to have started back in 1865 – The Hatfields and McCoys.
The Hatfields and McCoys
The distillery name was inspired by the notorious feuds between the Hatfields and McCoys, and is a double entendre with gun barrels and whiskey barrels. Dueling Barrels will feature tours of the brewery and distillery, beginning with a visit to a small theatre to view a video of what guests will experience. A tour of the distillery and brewhouse will follow, where the process will be explained in depth, and then will end with a visit to the tasting room where the products can be sampled.
“With Alltech’s global reach, it is expected that Dueling Barrels’ beer, whiskey and moonshine, all from Eastern Kentucky, will go to the global market by the end of next year,” said Dr. Pearse Lyons, president and founder of Alltech. “It is also our hope that Dueling Barrels will extend the Kentucky Bourbon Trail into Eastern Kentucky, bringing visitors, tourism dollars and international publicity with it. If Dueling Barrels is added to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail by the Kentucky Distillers’ Association, it would become the first and only stop east of Lexington.” Seeing as how Town Branch Distillery is on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and Eric Gregory, President of the Kentucky Distillers’ Association was on hand for the groundbreaking, I’m sure Dueling Barrels Distillery will one day officially be the furthest stop east on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.
