Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg, Moore County, Tennessee has announced the release of its 2021 single barrel Tennessee Whiskey. This is not the first single barrel release from the Lynchburg distillery, but it is the highest proof Tennessee Whiskey released from Old No. 7.
Location, Location, Location – In the Rickhouse
The location that a barrel of whiskey ages in the warehouse or rickhouse has a huge effect on the maturation process. The lower floors in the warehouse tend to stay moist and cool which ends up netting out the lowest proof in the warehouse. On the other hand, the top of the warehouse tends to be hot and dry and ends up netting out the highest proof barrels in the warehouse.
In the case of the Jack Daniel’s Coy Hill release these single barrels were aged on Coy Hill. The Coy Hill rickhouse sits on the highest hill on the Jack Daniel Distillery property. And these barrels selected for the 2021 release were kept on the top floors of the highest rickhouse. The result is the highest proof Jack Daniel’s single barrel release ever with a range between 137.4 proof (68.7% ABV) and 148.3 proof (74.15% ABV).
For comparative purposes the standard Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 Tennessee Whiskey is bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
“The Coy Hill High Proof is all about pushing the limit for single barrel maturation to create one of our boldest, most innovative whiskeys we have ever released,” says Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller Chris Fletcher. “It highlights one of the unique attributes of the Jack Daniel Distillery – the dry air of the highest floors of the barrel houses – and the amazing impact it has on whiskey making.”

Jack Daniel Mash Bill
Coy Hill High Proof is made from Jack Daniel’s classic 80% corn, 12% malted barley and 8% rye grain bill. The whiskey is mellowed drop by drop through 10-feet of sugar maple charcoal before entering barrels located within Coy Hill barrel houses #8 and #13. The whiskey is then matured until it is later bottled, uncut, from those single barrels. Jack Daniel’s did not release an age statement on these single barrels.
Each single barrel annual expression highlights the craftsmanship and innovation mindset in whiskey-making at the Jack Daniel Distillery. The Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel annual special release is hand-selected from the highest parts of our barrel houses and bottled from single barrels just like the Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Select, Rye & Barrel-Proof collection.
The Jack Daniel’s 2021 Single Barrel Tennessee Whiskey Coy Hill High Proof is bottled at barrel strength and will hit shelves starting in November. It will be available in a 750ml size with a suggested retail price of $70.00.
