We can only guess if a tree grows in Brooklyn but we are pretty sure they do. What we do know for sure is when it comes to Kings County Distillery in Brooklyn, New York is that this maker of craft spirits is most definitely growing. Since its founding in 2010 its shifted from a collection of five 24-liter stainless steel stills to a pair of Forsyths copper stills with swan necks to a new Vendome Copper & Brass Works submarine style still also with a swan neck. What does it all mean? It means that the first legal distillery in NYC since Prohibition has just wrapped up a four year project and increased its capacity by 5x.
Kings County Distillery Releases 750 ml Bottles for the 1st Time
Like a lot of craft distilleries Kings County Distillery started out small. They went from basically operating out of a closet to a now 120-year-old Paymaster Building in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Distillery Co-Founder and Head Distiller Colin Spoelman said this release of the 750 ml bottles coincides with the completion of a four year project to increase distillation capacity at the distillery and will provide them with a steady pipeline of aged bourbon, rye, and other American whiskeys.
Kings County Distillery’s original bottle, a 200ml flask released in 2010, immediately became an international sensation and an exemplar of the Brooklyn artisan and craft distilling movement. The distillery’s flagship whiskeys—Kings County Straight Bourbon, Kings County Peated Bourbon, and Kings County Single Malt whiskey— are now all available in 750ml bottles custom designed and imported from England.
“We built our business off of 200ml and 375ml bottles, which is unusual, but was a fit for our home audience in New York City, who were people shopping on foot and happy to slip a flask in their pocket. Small bottles also allowed customers to take a risk on something new. But as we now have regular customers asking for larger bottles, as well as distribution in 20 other states and 6 countries, our sizing has grown up. Bars and restaurants that will be especially grateful of the new format, and for our regular customers, it means more of our whiskey at a better price,” says Spoelman.
The Kings County Straight Bourbon, Kings County Peated Bourbon, and Kings County Single Malt whiskey in 750ml bottles are available now at the distillery and throughout the tri-state area. They have a suggested retail price of $69-75 and will soon be nationally available just in time for the fall whiskey season. Kings County will continue to sell the smaller size bottles as well.
